Welcome, Friend, to your monthly connection to Cook Children's stories, donors and our Promise.
A Parent's Perspective
Optimism is contagious.
Angela Winters experienced a routine pregnancy through her first 25 weeks, then a sonogram changed her family's life forever. A membrane had formed over a defect on their son's back. He would be born with spina bifida. "You're living in one world and then one day your whole world changes completely," Angela said. After the initial emotions passed, the Winters family rejoiced in the upcoming birth of their son and made plans for medical treatment after he was born.
Bryce Winters was born July 1, 2005 and immediately went into surgery to close the opening of his spinal cord. Two months later, a shunt was placed in Bryce's brain to alleviate excess fluid. Bryce, now 7, has had 11 surgeries at Cook Children's. "The surgeons at Cook Children's have done the most amazing things for him," Angela said.
Angela's optimistic and upbeat attitude seems to be contagious. Because of it, Bryce also has a positive outlook on life. He was selected to participate in a Cook Children's photo shoot showcasing patients in their favorite sports. Unsure of how he would respond to this opportunity, Angela was thrilled with his reasoning for wanting to participate: he wanted to show other little kids in wheelchairs that they can play baseball, too.
Donor Spotlight: The Frazell Family
How two lives inspired a night of Pickin' for Preemies.
Jaycie and Castin are healthy, happy 8- and 5- year-olds, respectively, but that wasn't the case when they were born. What should have been a joyous occasion surrounding the birth of a child became one of uncertainty and fear for their parents, Justin and Casey Frazell, as both children spent time at Cook Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Justin, the morning host on 95.9 The Ranch, was asked to choose a charity to promote, and he and his wife took no time determining what mean the most to them - the NICU that gave them two healthy children when pre-term birth brought their children into the world early.
With Justin's connections to the Texas Red Dirt music world, Pickin' for Preemies was born. The annual event has raised nearly $500,000 for Cook Children's NICU. This year's Seventh Annual Pickin' for Preemies takes place Monday, September 3. Some artists will be revealed in advance, and others are a special surprise for the night of the show. Justin and Casey have taken their two loves, Texas music and their children, and combined them to make for an annual night of memories and celebration at Billy Bob's Texas.
