Welcome, Friend, to your monthly connection to Cook Children's stories, donors and our Promise.
A Patient's Perspective From patient to volunteer, and so much more.
Patients at Cook Children's don't just come to the hospital to get better. Some, like Michael, come to share their experiences with others. Michael began his journey at Cook Children's at the age of 10 for treatment of Crohn's Disease. Having a chronic illness, Michael learned how to work through the pain and how to keep his spirits up during hospital stays. Now, he uses his experiences to encourage patients, just like him.
At age 15, the Child Life Specialist working with Michael's Crohn's Disease support group invited him to join Cook Children's Youth Advisory Council, known as the YAC-PAC. From there, Michael says his volunteer work at Cook Children's "just snowballed" from one day a week to his current four to five times a week. Three summers ago, he joined the summer Junior Volunteer program and set a goal to serve 500 volunteer hours before leaving for college (the summer requirement is 32 hours). Paige Jordan, Junior Volunteer Program Coordinator, says, "Michael is the example of what a Junior Volunteer is at Cook Children's. He is always willing to help and jump right in with any project that needs attention, whether with patient care or in the office. He is the perfect role model for the program."
Today, at age 18, he is finishing his final summer as a Junior Volunteer, starts college in the fall to study pre-med and completed 500 hours of service on June 25. Michael enjoys volunteering because he knows he offers a unique perspective to patients, being one himself. He hopes his experience will carry over when he becomes a pediatric gastroenterologist, so he can treat people with the same chronic illness he continues to fight each day.

Donor Spotlight: Hari Mari creates Flops Fighting Cancer Helping our patients, one pair of flops at a time.
Hari Mari, a Texas flip flop company, knows that Giving Feels Good at Cook Children's. As a corporate partner in our Partners in our Promise program, Hari Mari has the opportunity to give to Cook Children's through a financial gift, in-kind donation or product promotion as a way to share our commitment in keeping our community's children healthy and safe.
Hari Mari has named July Flops Fighting Cancer month. Throughout the year, Hari Mari commits $3 of every pair of flip flops sold to help fight pediatric cancer at Cook Children's. During Flops Fighting Cancer, they are doubling that commitment to $6 per pair sold. Hari Mari will visit Cook Children's patients throughout July, as well as raise funds through t-shirt sales and their web site to support Flops Fighting Cancer.
