A Patient's Perspective
One teen turns her cancer battle into a way to give back
At 15, a healthy, athletic Carley began experiencing lower back pain. Thinking the pain would subside, she battled through it for nearly a year. In April 2010, Carly was diagnosed with Stage Four Ewing's Sarcoma. Her tumor - inoperable. She immediately began intensive, bi-weekly chemotherapy treatments at Cook Children's.
Unsure of her future, Carly and her family formed the Carley J. Rutledge Sarcoma Foundation to meet the needs of adolescents and young adults (AYA) battling cancer, as well as to fund critically needed research to improve the cure rates that have not changed in more than 25 years.
After 11 months of treatments, Carley proved she is a fighter. Today, her scans are clear. Wanting nothing but clear, bright futures for other cancer patients, Carley and her family continue to raise funds and build awareness for AYA cancer patients at Cook Children's. Visit our website to learn more about the AYA Program at Cook Children's.
Donor Spotlight: JoAnn Boston, Cook Children's Volunteer
Giving of time helps, too.
In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Week, our volunteer services department will honor all Cook Children's volunteers at an annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner. This year, JoAnn Boston will receive the Lifetime Achievement Volunteer Award in recognition of her many years of service at Cook Children's.
JoAnn started volunteering more than 25 years ago, and since then she has recorded more than 6,500 volunteer hours helping patients and families in the Enchanted Castle Gift Shop. Her friendly smile and helpful hands make a difference to all who are searching for that perfect gift to brighten someone's day.
Much of what happens at Cook Children's happens because of volunteers. We are truly thankful for all of our volunteers and their commitment to helping us make life better for the children and families we serve.
