A Patient's Perspective
Overcoming weight
Andy Anzaldua received sobering news last year at his annual doctor visit. His pediatrician warned him that he may have high cholesterol due to his weight. Andy was in the highest percentile in weight for a child his age. After blood tests were completed, the warning became a reality: 10-year-old Andy had high cholesterol. Andy needed to make life-altering changes, and fast. Andy always loved to eat and was the tallest kid in the class, but that day at the doctor, Andy’s mom, Lucy, knew her thoughts of “He’s a kid, he will grow out of it” were no longer an option. Lucy signed Andy up for the Weight Management and Healthy Lifestyle program at Cook Children’s. Although Andy was reluctant, he joined the program and realized this was his turn-around point. With family support, a nutritionist and an exercise program, Andy has already lost 20 pounds and his cholesterol has dropped. According to Lucy, “As Andy’s confidence grew he gained this incredible will power. All of it just became his new way of life. I saw an incredible transformation.” He completed a one-mile run in the fall and decided his next goal will be the Cowtown 5K at the end of February, the same one his mom runs.
